The gameplay gets intense as you morph into different characters. The impressive graphics are rich as you move through all of the skill levels. Great game, to bad its so rare!Best RPG for the Saturn, hands down! Now that is not saying much, however, I have been playing rpg's since the nes/sms.
I love this game, got it 2 yrs ago for 200$, and it is a unique and great rpg! It is short for a rpg, I took my time and still beat it in under 30 hrs. However, the story and gameplay are top notch! Only rpg I prefer in story is Final Fantasy 6, love me Kefka! Anywho, I only got this cause I was able to get it half off, 400 bills is hard to swallow(200 was hard enough).
Yet, this game is great, combat is the highlight! Duration is the weakness, you just want more! Great game, still hard to recommend for the price. One of my top 10 games of all time (and I know good games!)There is a lot of hype surrounding this game and having finished twice now (10 years apart) It's worth every penny. Sure by todays standards its not that pretty, but its the gameplay and story telling that really make this game shine. There is some debate as to its rarity - some 20K-30K NTSC US copies were produced - but what makes it rarer is that the source code to make the game has not been recovered meaning that you are not likely to see this on PSN or XBL anytime soon!. Still a very innovative RPGUsually, I don´t like a very combat focused RPG, but this one is combat focused and still very innovative.
This game deserved being played for his unique combat system.pros-Unique combat system, even if compared with nowdays games.-Great graphics for his time.-Good story-Sometimes there is puzzles inside battleCons-Story is very linear, like most of japanese RPG-I think that they try to create Azel like a very hot woman, but it didn´t work:P-The main character is a loser without his dragon, at least until CD 3.
I made quite a killing selling off swag I got from E3. So I can easily afford picking up Panzer Dragoon Saga off ebay. The only problem is.
I originally thought that I would essentially be getting PDS for 'free' since all the swag is free. But now that I actually have the money in my paypal account, I realized that I still am actually paying $125 or however much it costs for it.
Subtle distinction, but it's there.Anyway, for the fans out there, would you recommend buying it? It's been that elusive Holy Grail of mine for so many years now. Tough for me to recommend a game for that much money. I generally despise RPG's myself, but loved Panzer Saga, more because it fleshed out a terrific series then anything else. But hell, I'm not sure even I'd pay that much for it.I would love to see the Saturn Panzer games ported to PSP, so people would be able to try PDS out without paying a small fortune (of course that would depend on owning a PSP already).I guess I'll put it like this.if you really love the Panzer universe and want to gain a better and deeper understanding of it, as well as basically live in it for a while, it might be a reasonable enough price. Otherwise you're probably better off grabbing several games for the price. If you can afford to purchase it then I'd say you should do so.
Most of us spend upwards to hundreds of dollars of console launches for games that tend to not be so great after our heads have cleared after the honeymoon launches are over. I'm just saying that atleast with Panzer Saga youre guaranteed to have a pretty darn good game overall,I think you'll enjoy it. I just hope the internet hasn't raised the expectation bar too high for you my friend. Its a good game but I have no desire to go back and play it again(beat it 3 times.) I won't sell my copy, for nostalgiac reasons plus its part of great SEGA history, this SEGA fan can't let go of that.
Disclaimer: I don't like the game (it's not actively bad, just the most overrated mediocre RPG of the last couple of generations). I got it for £20, which seemed to me a sane price. If you're at all graphics-whorey, then the answer is a straight-up no. You've got to have no problems with PSX/Saturn-era 3D graphics to consider playing this one.It would help if you're a big fan of the PD world/story. If you're not, then there's really not that much here for you - as an RPG it's been outdone many times since. You're not getting it for free.
That is real money - bear in mind you could easily pick up three less rare RPGs for that price, so if you're not about the collecting and the Sega nostalgia and just about the RPGs, then that might well be a better option.' Just get Orta' is, however, the wrong answer.
Doesn't even compare - it's like saying 'Just get Dynasty Warriors 5' to someone asking about Dynasty Tactics 2. Why on earth recommend a game from an entirely different genre? It's my favorite game ever. I'm not sure if it's worth that much money though. Also, it's hard for me to say that it would still be my favorite game ever if I only got around to playing it now instead of in 1999. It also starts out quite slow.I liked it because it of its surreal artistic style, the meticulously creative world it takes place in, and the engaging battle system. It also had a good dose of subtlety in its story and dialog which went a long way for me.
It's as if someone made a game just for me and what I like. I won't pretend that it translates that well for everyone else. Just buy it and play it.
Play it on a small LCD screen like the one for PSone, it will look way better. The game is awesome, a total classic which in most ways has not been bested in my opinion.I actually had dinner with the lead artist on friday night, he asked me why I liked the game so much and I said besides the brilliant character design and BRILLIANT combat system, the ambience and immersiveness of the environments was what did it for me.
After a long day fighting the minions of darkness, its great to sit around the campfire with your dragon as long as you want and just chill, drinking a bud. Classic, priceless game in my opinon. Don't listen to the haters. Anyway, to the original question, PDS = short RPG with ugly grainy 3D graphics and is more cinema-focused than even the Final Fantasies.Nevertheless, the battle system is really well done with a unique shooter spin on 'turn-based' battles (it's semi real-time). One of the few RPGs that is actually fun to -play-, not only to read.
The story is pretty well executed. It won't win awards, but there's some neat spins to it.The music of course is totally awesome, as PD games tend to be.My vote is: get it.
One of the few RPGs that actually have advanced the genre past its 15 yr old roots. I'm not exactly sure why some would call it mediocre at all, aside from the ugly 3d. I made quite a killing selling off swag I got from E3.

I don't entirely disagree with you, however:I do not know why you think it's ATB-lite. The fact is, because Final Fantasy does not have positioning elements automatically makes it less strategic than PDS.
So in contrast, I'd say it's better than ATB.ATB is a real-time indicator of adding an agility bar so that people with faster agility ratings can have more turns than those with slower ones.PDS's system one ups it because it has more depth (3 meters vs 1) and because the agility bar freezes when you move. That is to say, there are things you can do that would affect your agility bar. It's deeper because now you have decisions like: 'Do I attack now? Or should I charge up to 2 or 3 bars so I can unleash a better attack? The enemy is going to pound me because I'm in the red zone. But if I stay here another 2 seconds, I can charge up my meter to full.
If I move, it won't charge, and I may lose my opportunity to strike.' There are more outcomes to weigh, more consequences to every decision. You're right though. It is still simplified, and maybe not as thoroughly explored such as other semi-realtime games (ie Growlanser). Nevertheless, even as what it is, it is still immensely better in gameplay than most of the RPGs people consider as 'good'. No, it doesn't automatically make it better.
It gives it the potential/b to be better but it isn't automatic. I mean, if they had better boss battle design which involved the positioning elements more actively, then sure I'd say it was but I don't recall a single boss battle in the game that made me really work the positioning by design.
Combine it with the fact that the dragon morphing is largely useless in the game and you've got a combat system that's largely middling fare. I think folks remember it because of the Panzer Dragoon feel of it rather than the actual gameplay components. As for the game itself, if you're planning to buy and resell it later then sure I'd say give it a shot. Otherwise, I would avoid it. Aside from the nice soundtrack, the game is largely mediocre. No, it doesn't automatically make it better.

I highly disagree here, re-played this game about 2 years back and the two elements that stuck with me the most were the boss design and dragon morphing, the late-game particularly did a neat job of mixing the two for some frantic offense/defense/magic morphs to handle many of the boss patterns on the fly. Bosses were particularly exciting as the game progressed, dodging and shifting were a necessity to avoid dangerous 'red zones' and often cricual to manipulating the gimongous beasts into revealing their weakpoints. Both visceral and puzzle-y.The big problem with the game really just involved ANYTHING involving walking on the ground. Loadtimes were pretty bad, and fetch-quests/backtracking across multiple zones just to unlock the next FMV or plot sequence got pretty out of hand.
The momentum really slowed to a crawl as you kind of aimlessly scour for the NPC or sequence to get the game back on track. Back on the dragon, things got a lot more interesting.
Dungeons had a few signature twists, and though the random encounters got a bit brutal, the semi-twitch nature of the game really was a help. I don't recall any boss battles to be particularly interesting nor any that required a lot of strategic thinking that forced the maximum usage of the positioning and dragon morphing.
It was all ho-hum to me (although it has been quite a few years since I last played it). As for the Dragon Morphing, I thought the differences between the classes of dragons were just too minimal to be of great use. I remember using the defensive form Dragon and taking only a handful of points of damage less than the other Dragon forms. I wondered what the purpose of that form if it wasn't going to give you a massive defense boost. Just buy it and play it.
